DLP TV Bulbs
Commonly found in projectors, the DLP bulb is also found in many high definition television sets of today. They may even be found in yours, if you have purchased an HDTV recently. Like any other electrical appliance, your TV or projector will need periodical maintenance, and that may include replacing the DLP bulb located in the internal mechanism. Maintenance will ensure constant and reliable operation for years to come.
The DLP bulb is designed to last fairly long on the devices it is installed in. With such a long lamp life, one may wonder if it will even be necessary to change it out in the first place, even just for regular maintenance. However, the lifespan of the average DLP bulb can vary greatly depending on usage. Getting the most out of the money you paid for your device may be reason enough to merit regular replacement anyway.
The DLP Bulb: How It Works
The Digital Light Processing Bulb, or DLP, is a technology used in TVs and video projectors in order to project accurate images. In projectors, the DLP works by projecting an image through microscopic mirrors placed on a semiconductor chip. The matrix layout of these mirrors represents one or more pixels shown in the projected image. Each DLP bulb will also have about half of the number of mirrors as the advertised image resolutions.
DLP bulbs are also found in common LED-based HDTV sets. When a DLP is integrated within a TV, it eliminates the use of a color wheel because of the improved color gamut it offers. It is also capable of starting up more quickly than other systems. The lamp also has a long lifespan, making replacement fairly negligible.
The use of a DLP also has other significant advantages over other projection systems:
- Smooth, jitter-free images are possible on full HD-resolution televisions and projectors.
- LCD projectors benefit from having less screen-door effects, which are the visible pixel lines on a projected image.
- They are also smaller, allowing them to fit in thinner and sleeker projectors and television sets.
- A DLP bulb is much easier to replace than backlights on LCD screens.
- DLP bulbs do not fall victim to color decay, where projected images become yellow after a period of time.
- DLP TVs are also significantly cheaper than plasma and LCD panel displays, and still offer full HD resolutions.
However, all these advantages may not be fully realized if your DLP bulb device requires repair. The average DLP bulb requires replacement after about 2000 to 5000 hours, and can cost hundreds of dollars depending on the brand and model of the device. Even newer generations of TVs, which are advertised to have DLP bulbs which last a lifetime, may come with defective ones that need servicing.
Maintenance and Replacement
Like all high-performance electrical appliances, the DLP bulb will need repair and replacement on occasion. Modern DLP bulbs may be advertised to last a lifetime, but you will never know if your TV or projector will come with a defective one. When the time comes, you may need to maintenance, service, or outright replace DLP bulbs.
- People who play video games on HD television sets may notice poor response times. This may be a cause of upscale lag rather than your DLP bulb, so make sure your cables are in order. If you own a modern video game console, check to see if it is plugged in with an HDMI cable.
- If your screen suddenly loses brightness, or appears dimly-lit in any way, then it may be time to replace the DLP bulb inside it. Some people may wait until the image is completely gone before replacing the internal DLP bulb.
- Before replacing a DLP bulb on a television or projector, call up the store you bought it from, or the manufacturer to get an estimate on costs. Be prepared to shell out at least a hundred dollars on one.
- A manufacturer can suggest recommended DLP bulbs that will fit your TV or projector. Buying from third parties is always an option, but the manufacturer’s recommendation will ensure that the DLP bulb will work properly on your device.
- Depending on the make and model of your TV or projector, a DLP bulb will be relatively easy to install, or extremely hard. When in doubt, send it over to a licensed service center so that a trained technician can do it for you.
A little maintenance can also go a long way to ensure your DLP TV lasts a long time. To make sure the image on your screen isn’t a result of a fading DLP bulb, try the following:
- Wipe the surface of the screen with a soft, non-abrasive cloth made of micro-fiber. Using abrasive materials to wipe your screen with may scratch the surface, and deteriorate the overall image quality.
- A cloth damp with water may cause static when applied on a TV screen. Instead of water, try to use chemical solutions made for wiping screens with; most computer and appliance superstores should stock these special cleaning agents.
- When in doubt, always seek the aid of the nearest service center or manufacturer hotline to diagnose any problems.
With these tips, you should be able to get a long lifespan and consistently high-quality image in your DLP bulb TV or projector.
